The Secret to the Juiciest Meatballs 🍖💦
- Use a mix of meats – A combo of beef and pork gives the best flavour and texture.
- Fresh ingredients – Garlic, onion, and fresh herbs make a difference.
- Soak your breadcrumbs – Mix them with a splash of milk to keep the meatballs moist.
- Stuff them with mozzarella – Because who doesn’t love melty cheese in every bite?
Best Ingredients for the Ultimate Mozzarella Meatball Subs 🛒
- Mozzarella: Use fresh mozzarella for a creamy, gooey centre. Avoid pre-shredded cheese—it won’t melt as nicely.
- Tomato Passata: A smooth, rich passata is key to a flavour-packed sauce. Look for an Italian brand for authentic taste.
- Beef & Pork Mince: A mix of 80/20 beef and fatty pork mince keeps the meatballs juicy.
- Fresh Herbs: Basil and parsley add a fresh, vibrant kick—skip the dried stuff if you can.
- Soft, Fresh Rolls: Use brioche buns, hoagie rolls, or classic white subs—something sturdy enough to hold all that saucy goodness!
How to Serve These Meatball Subs 🍷🥗
- Side Salad: A crisp Caesar salad or Italian chopped salad balances out the richness.
- Fries or Wedges: Sweet potato fries or garlic parmesan wedges are perfect for dipping into extra sauce.
- Wine Pairing: A bold red wine like Shiraz or Chianti complements the tomato sauce beautifully.
- Non-Alcoholic Pairing: Try a homemade lemonade or a classic root beer for a fun twist.
Storage & Reheating Tips 🍱
- Fridge: Store meatballs and sauce in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Keep the rolls separate to avoid sogginess.
- Freezer: Meatballs freeze beautifully! Place them (with sauce) in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.
- Reheating: Warm in a pan over low heat or microwave in short bursts. If frozen, thaw overnight in the fridge first.
Pro Tip: If reheating in the oven, wrap your sub in foil and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 10 minutes—this keeps the roll crispy while warming everything up!
