The Secret to a Perfect Cottage Pie

Want to take your Cottage Pie with Sweet Potato Mash to the next level? Here are my top tips!

1. Choose the Right Mince

I love using beef mince for that deep, rich flavour, but you can also try lamb mince for a more traditional shepherd’s pie vibe. If you want a leaner option, turkey or chicken mince works great too!

2. Don’t Skip the Worcestershire Sauce

This little ingredient adds a serious depth of flavour. It enhances the umami taste of the beef, making the filling extra rich and delicious.

3. Add a Dash of Tomato Paste & Red Wine

A spoonful of tomato paste gives a lovely richness, and a splash of red wine adds depth to the sauce. (Don’t worry, the alcohol cooks off, leaving just the amazing flavour behind! 🍷)

4. Get That Mash Super Creamy

Sweet potatoes can sometimes be a little stringy, so here’s the trick: boil them until super soft, then mash with butter, cream, and a touch of nutmeg for extra warmth and flavour. A pinch of salt enhances their natural sweetness too!

5. Let It Rest Before Serving

This step is KEY! Once baked, let your cottage pie sit for 10 minutes before serving. This helps everything set up nicely and makes it easier to scoop out perfect portions. 🍽️

🍷 What to Serve with Cottage Pie

This Cottage Pie with Sweet Potato Mash is already a complete meal, but if you’re looking to round it out, here are some great serving ideas:

  • Steamed Greens – Broccoli, green beans, or peas add a nice pop of colour and freshness. 🥦
  • Crusty Bread – Perfect for scooping up every last bite of that delicious filling. 🥖
  • Simple Side Salad – A light salad with a tangy vinaigrette balances out the richness of the dish. 🥗
  • A Glass of Shiraz – If you’re in the mood for a drink, a bold red wine like Shiraz pairs beautifully with the savoury mince filling. 🍷

🛍️ How to Store & Reheat Cottage Pie

This Cottage Pie with Sweet Potato Mash is great for leftovers! Here’s how to store and reheat it properly:

  • In the Fridge: Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
  • In the Freezer: Freeze in portions for up to 3 months. Just make sure to let it cool completely before freezing!
  • Reheating: Warm up in the oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 20 minutes, or microwave individual portions for a quick meal.
