Why You'll Love These Air Fryer Roasted Potatoes

First of all, who doesn’t love potatoes? They’re the ultimate comfort food! With an air fryer, you get perfectly roasted potatoes that are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, but without all the oil you’d typically need for roasting. Plus, they’re ready in just 20 minutes – can you believe that? If you’re after a quick side dish or a crunchy snack to munch on, these air fryer roasted potatoes are the answer.
The beauty of this recipe is that it’s incredibly simple but delivers on flavour. All you need are some pantry staples: olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and cumin to create an irresistible batch of potatoes.
When it comes to choosing potatoes, I prefer using Dutch Creams or Desirees. These varieties hold their shape well and give you that perfect balance of crispiness and creaminess. You can also go for Kipfler or red potatoes if you want something a bit waxier, which still turns out fab in the air fryer. Make sure to cut them into similar-sized chunks for even cooking. Smaller pieces will be extra crispy (my favourite!), while larger ones will have more of that soft, fluffy centre.
These air fryer roasted potatoes are super versatile. Serve them as a side with just about any meal, whether it’s grilled chicken, steak, or even a veggie-loaded salad. They’re also perfect for Sunday roasts or as a snack on their own with your favourite dipping sauce. Speaking of dips, these potatoes pair wonderfully with a tangy aioli or a simple homemade sour cream and chive dip. For something a bit different, why not try a sweet chilli mayo or even some sriracha for a spicy kick?
Oh, and let’s not forget breakfast! These potatoes make an excellent side for a hearty Aussie breakfast – eggs, bacon, and maybe even some grilled tomatoes on the side. It’s basically hash browns, but better! 😋
If you happen to have leftovers (although I doubt it!), these air fryer roasted potatoes store well in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just pop them in an airtight container. To reheat, throw them back into the air fryer for about 5 minutes at 180°C – they’ll be just as crispy as when you first made them.
You can also freeze them if you’re really planning ahead! Freeze the cooked potatoes on a baking tray first, then transfer them to a freezer bag. To reheat, air fry them from frozen at 200°C for about 10 minutes.
Using a good-quality extra virgin olive oil makes all the difference. Look for cold-pressed Australian olive oils if possible – they have a vibrant flavour that really complements the spices in this dish. Plus, it adds that beautiful golden finish when the potatoes are roasting.
While the classic garlic, onion, and paprika combo is always a winner, don’t be afraid to mix it up. Lemon pepper, herbes de Provence, or a touch of parmesan sprinkled at the end can take these potatoes to the next level. Experiment with different spice blends – the air fryer makes almost everything taste amazing!Cooking Fats & Oils

  • 4 large potatoes
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Method

  1. Cut your potatoes into bite-sized chunks (the smaller they are, the crispier they'll get!)
  2. Drizzle the olive oil over the potato chunks and toss them around to get everything coated.
  3. Sprinkle on the garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and cumin. Give it another toss so every piece is packed with flavour.
  4. Pop your potatoes in the air fryer at 200°C for 20 minutes. If you love a dark, extra crispy roast (like me), add an extra 5 minutes.
  5. Serve them hot and crunchy, straight out of the air fryer! They’re perfect as a side or even on their own with a little dip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use sweet potatoes instead of regular potatoes?
Absolutely! Sweet potatoes will work beautifully in this recipe, though they might need a few extra minutes in the air fryer as they tend to be denser. Just keep an eye on them!
You bet! You can par-cook the potatoes in the air fryer, then reheat them for 5-7 minutes at 200°C when you’re ready to serve. They’ll crisp right up again.
The options are endless! Aioli, sour cream, sweet chilli sauce, or even just ketchup. But if you’re feeling fancy, a bit of truffle mayo or garlic butter would be incredible.
